Every year between 38,000 and 70,000 Hoosiers suffer a form of acquired/traumatic brain injury. (TBI) Many TBI's result in lifelong changes affecting the survivor and their family.
The CDC and most journals define a TBI as an alteration of consciousness caused by an external force. It is not necessary to suffer a loss of consciousness to have a TBI.
A concussion is a traumatic brain injury. Multiple concussions may result in long term mental, physical and emotional dysfunction as well as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, ALS, CTE and Dementia.
The cumulative cost of TBI and concussion in the United States, is approximately 78 billion dollars per year. The cost to survivor's and family members is incalculable.
